Looking for an affordable and effective way to vacuum seal your Mason jars? In this Pawcute Mason Jar Vacuum Sealer review, Iâll walk you through whatâs included in the kit, how it solves common jar-sealing issues, and the simple hack I used to make it work with my trusty (but ancient!) FoodSaver vacuum sealer.
Bonus: Iâll also tell you whether the manual pump version is worth the extra buck.
â Quick Answer: Is the Pawcute Mason Jar Vacuum Sealer worth it?
Yes â the Pawcute vacuum sealer kit is a great low-cost option for sealing regular and wide-mouth Mason jars. It includes lids, a hose, a lid remover, and (optionally) a manual pump. It works best with newer vacuum sealer models, but older FoodSaver units may need a hose adapter hack, which you can learn about in this review.
It's a handy dandy gadget by "Pawcute" which is available on Amazon. It comes with two different-sized vacuum lids: one for wide-mouth jars, and one for regular-mouth jars - plus the hose, a lid remover... a manual pump, and six spare jar lids.
I read in other reviews for the FoodSaver model (and other types, to be fair) that Amazon customers noticed the inner rubber ring came out, and people were having issues sealing their jars. Some people even resorted to using TWO lids to try to complete the vacuum suction by adding a little height!
I was pleasantly surprised.
Check out this video demo of me using the wide mouth lid vacuum top, and my hack for older models (vacuum sealer models, not aging runway fashion models!) and how I made it "work" with my V2240 FoodSaver vacuum sealer (it's over a decade old!)
The connector hose I ended up using in the video (which I thought earned me a "10" in the "brainwave" department) is shown just a little bit further down the page (click the "connector hose" link if you can't wait... ;-)
The "Egg Page" I mention in the video for the lady's tip to remove the inner sealed lid is here. However, the lid-removing tool that comes with the Pawcute works awesomely.
By the way, the FoodSaver does not (or at least doesn't for me), turn OFF when it has extracted the air from the Mason jar. I can pretty much hear/tell exactly when it would have switched over to its SEAL mode (when vacuum-sealing BAGS - from past experience when using the vacuum and then SEAL function).
So listen closely in the video as to when I stop the air-suctioning of the jar!
That's why I "tilted" and then removed the black soft rubber cup (that was on top of the Pawcute) to break the suction, and then turned the FoodSaver off.
I'll give credit to Pawcute for saying which food vacuum sealers it won't work with, but again, my model is "so old," it didn't work. I hear you asking, "Just how old is it, Susan?" Let me say that it was used on Noah's Ark...
Again, I ended up using my "green-ended hose connector" (that I also bought on Amazon) for sealing FoodSaver REUSABLE bags - which IS its intended purpose, by the way.
This is Pawcute's note on Amazon:
Note: If your vacuum sealer machine is FM2000, FM2100, FM2500, FM4800, FM4900, FM 5800; VS0160, VS1130, VS0100, VS0150, please use the original hose that comes with the vacuum machine or choose another mason jar sealer vacuum kit that with a manual vacuum pump.
I just now went back to the kitchen to double-check that in my haste I hadn't tried hard enough to make the connector hose that comes with the two lids work. I still couldn't make the hose work.
NOTE: I am keeping the connector hose that came with the two lids in a safe place because I know my trusty old FoodSaver is not going to last forever. (Don't worry, it can't hear me from here).
I honestly WISH I'd forked out the extra buck to get the manual pump, plus the extra lids. Call me cheap. I could have used the manual pump! But hey, you live and learn. So get the manual pump version so you can use it in a power outage.
My "dollar-cheaper" choice has two lids, the hose, and the opener.
The "dollar-extra" option has two lids, the hose, the opener, six spare lids, and the manual pump.
For the record, the "bare bones" and the "extras" Pawcute options are available in two color choices.
I chose the one with the white top with the balance being green. No idea why.
The other style is the main body, which is green, with a band of white. Same difference! Anyhoo.
Suffice to say that the surface on the very top around the vacuum hole where the hose should be inserted was smooth enough for my hack to work. If the surface had been heavily textured, it would not have worked for me (or you!).
The Pawcute image at the top of the page contains the special "lid remover" (i.e. "extras") which actually works! It also opens bottles of beer which would be handy if I drank beer. Gave that up in 1997 and that's a whole other story
But I do want you to visit my "Dehydrate Eggs Safely" page and if, like me, you opted to save a dollar - Elissa's video shows you what she uses to remove vacuum-sealed lids... and it ain't her fingernails AND it's something we all have plenty of! (Grin).
If you don't want to use Mason jars and like the flexibility of bags, try reusable bags. My FoodSaver is an older model and I had to buy the up-to-date hose connector for the bags. I chose the 2-pk in case I broke it or lost it!
The black rubber suction end is firm, but supple enough to create a tight seal against the FoodSaver bags (as designed).
Yes, the hose shown below is the hose you see in the video (go watch it again!) And this is the hose I used for my hack to seal the Mason jars!
Here is the accessory hose 2-pk as seen in my video for vacuum sealing the FoodSaver reusable bags:
The image below is the FoodSaverÂŽ Reusable Quart Vacuum Zipper Bags and are sold 10 to a box.
It also includes a handy dandy zipper bag closure gadget! Use it... it works wonders. You should have seen me messin' around with just my fingers trying to seal the zipper part (sigh).
Below are the FoodSaverÂŽ Reusable Gallon Vacuum Zipper Bags which are sold 8 to a box and they also come with the bag zipper closure tool.
Thanks for checking out my review of the Pawcute Mason Jar Vacuum Sealer. If you're serious about preserving dried foods or prepping pantry staples, this budget-friendly kit is a smart addition. Just donât be like me â get the version with the manual pump! Youâll thank yourself when the powerâs out or your hose doesnât fit.
