Harley and Betty

Betty's Vegetables (and Parrots!)

My mother and I took a short trip out to see how Betty's vegetables were coming along. Read our first mention of Betty here.

Mom's friend, Betty, was eager to show me that you CAN grow veggies in Florida. She is also fondly known as "The Florida Bird Lady" by her friends!

Why is Betty called that?

Lovely Turquoise Blue and Yellow Plumage

Proud Mother Of Nine!

Well, Betty is the proud 'mother' of nine — yes nine! — fantastic parrots – along with one Cockatiel, and a huge dog named Max (who sadly passed away about a year after this page was first posted).

I have to share with you some photos of the beautiful parrots - what fantastic plumage they have!

That's Harley, in his cage.

These birds are the luckiest birds — and they know it!

Betty boards parrots and has taken in parrots from people who 'just don't want them anymore'.

It's a Full-Time Job

The Parrot (below) with his beak on the cage bar is a really naughty parrot! Betty says one morning she came in, he was out of his cage! He'd managed to UNSCREW the front panel – all by himself!

All this work with the parrots has not deterred Betty from getting started with her vegetable garden! We really enjoyed our stroll around Betty's one-acre garden - you could tell she loves tending it, and was very proud to show us her flowers too!

Betty's garden was a lovely display of a variety of palm trees, and a palm that was more like a bush which I'm sure Betty said was a "cardboard Palm" – Betty, if I've got that wrong, please let me know!

Mom and I returned home and decided to have a walk around my garden (it's not as tidy as Betty's ...) and we came across a full hedgerow of blackberries – I couldn't believe it! It just shows that you need to pay attention to your own garden and find out just what you have growing! We have started our garden planning. The following photos are from Betty's Vegetable garden. She has parsley, sweet potatoes, basil, tomatoes, cabbage; along with some blackberries! Betty's garden is simply lovely -- we're looking forward to revisiting Betty soon!

Update, mid June, 2015:
Sadly, Betty passed away.

We'll miss her and I'm sure her parrots will too!

Our condolences to her family.
